The second article will tell the tale of the Pagoda Paris (or the Red Pagoda), an imposing, Chinese-style pagoda located in the upper-class 8th arrondissement. With his vast wealth, his dream became a reality in 1926, when the building works were completed, under the joint direction of prominent architect Fernand Bloch and Mr Loo. 18th century red-lacquered screens line another room.

The Pagode de Vincennes is used by Buddhist schools of the Parisian region and has no religious leader. The pagoda is a place of common worship; it shelters the biggest Buddha of Europe, covered with gold leaf and measuring, including its seat, more than 9 meters high. The Pagode hosts relics of the historical Buddha since 2008. In 2011, the Pagoda was refurbished by a wealthy benefactor and operated as a private museum, and became the venue for many cultural events, receptions, formal dinners and auctions. A Tibetan Buddhist temple named Kagyu-Dzong was built in the 1980s in front of the Pagode which offers many activities with a variety of French and Asian teachers. Thus, people can learn the basics of Buddhism and meditation, participate in a yoga session or take a Japanese calligraphy class, or perhaps a Tibetan language lesson. Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

The Bois de Vincennes – a ‘green lung’ in the eastern section of Paris– is a great place for a leisurely cycle ride. Starting from the Porte Dorée (metro line 8, tram 3a), one of the 17 gateways built into the 19th-century Thiers wall, you will come to a 995-hectare expanse of woodland. The Bois was a royal hunting ground until the Revolution and subsequently used for other purposes, such as an artillery academy, before being developed, in the late 19th century, into the largest public park in Paris. This extraordinary era in La Pagode’s history continued until 1927 when the hosts could no longer carry on. The property was put up for sale. However, due to the unusual architecture, offers were not pouring in. For a few years La Pagode languished idly… until… a Chinese diplomatic delegation showed up. They were in search of a building for their embassy. They thought La Pagode’s architecture was perfectly suitable. Par ailleurs, elle est équipée d’un système d'éclairage de haute technologie et d’un système audio très professionnel. Le plus étonnant: le son, la lumière, l’eau et les couleurs de la fontaine se combinent harmonieusement. His defenders point to his generosity, recalling that he would often lend pieces to museums at his own expense, also reminding critics that he saved many Chinese antiquities from certain destruction during the frenzied vandalism of temples brought on by Mao’s Cultural Revolution. With a clever first run art movie programming and a brilliant restoration of the main auditorium, which now seats 212, the result was a huge success. In 1931, the Pagoda is reopened after interior arrangements to house a cinema. Specialized in the projection of films in original version, the establishment is in 1956 one of the first cinemas labeled "Art and Essay" and several filmmakers choose the Pagoda for their first. A favorite location for New Wave filmmakers in the 1960s, it has a second basement room in 1973, and its facade is renovated, the small Japanese garden next to the complex is also restored. This facelift is decided by the filmmaker Louis Malle, who then directs the Pagoda, before the Gaumont company took the reins of this institution of the 7th art at Paris in 1979.

Everything was going smoothly until the diplomats decided to have a closer inspection of the building. They didn’t like what they saw and promptly terminated the lease. This story continues on from my previous post about one of the three Paris pagodas, the Japanese-style pagoda, known as La Pagode, which was converted to a much-loved cinema. The other two are equally fascinating, with their own surprising stories to tell.

La Pagode closed. Then, in 1931, its doors reopened and voila! La Pagode had reincarnated into a cinema! The only cinema ever in the distinguished 7th arrondissement. The program catered to serious cinéphiles showing quality avant-garde films. During World War II when Paris was under Nazi occupation, the theater closed again; yet the place still buzzed with activity. Secret activity. French Resistance members were using the underground passages that connected La Pagode to neighboring mansions to move people around. In the final outcome, the case was adjudicated in favor of the owner and Ètoile had to vacate. La Pagode closed its doors in November 2015 “for renovations.” operated La Pagode for 15 years bringing the attendance to over 100,000 per year. Cinema-oriented events enhanced the cinephile experience. A few years ago the relationship between the owner and the management company began to sour and continued to deteriorate from tense to caustic. La Pagode looks sad and forlorn these days. More than three years have passed since its closure. It seems like we’ve seen this movie before. But La Pagode is a mythical place and seems to have a mysterious hand guiding its destiny because…Return to Route de la Tourelle and cycle past the Paris-Vincennes racecourse to your left. Continue along Route de la Ferme until you come to the École Du Breuil on your right. Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.
