We highlighted these waders last year, but we’re doing a double-take. Here’s why. They came out late in the season and I was one of the first in the country to wear them. I wore four brands of waders on over 100 outings last season, from Alaska to Mexico to Texas, and the LaCrosse Agility Waders were a favorite, making it into marshes, rivers, creeks and saltwater on over 60 hunts in temperatures ranging from 8ºF to 75ºF. The boots in the Agility Waders are very comfortable; I was a four-sport athlete in high school, played a bit of college ball, and quality footwear is high on my priority list. Waders, and chest waders in particular, are becoming ever more popular with all fly anglers. Increasingly, stillwater trout anglers are now taking advantage of the benefits of having a totally waterproof lower half to their clothing. Great for avoiding the dreaded ‘soggy bottom’ if you need to sit down on damp grass or wade just that little bit further than thigh waders will allow. Which type of waders are best for me? You need to stay as dry as you can. That will keep you from catching a cold or even the flu, and so waders are integral. Safeguards You from Slithering Creatures in the Water Trench foot is common in those who spend a lot of time in the water without proper protection. People like fly fishermen use waders because they stay in the water for hours on end, and they need the proper protection. [4]

To ensure maximum breathability you will need to wash your waders regularly in a detergent free soap based cleaner – we recommend Nikwax Tech Wash. It will revive both breathability and water repellence. Nikwax can be used in a washingmachine in accordance with the garments washing instructions. Bear in mind that to function correctly breathable fabrics must be clean to allow the passage of water vapour through the material. Beware the fast water at the tail of a pool – as the current starts to draw it can wash gravel out from under your feet making it impossible to keep balance. The original waders were produced using vulcanized rubber. These days, rubber waders have become more uncommon, but they still exist. The climate and conditions of Britain are not always the warmest and so many of the waist waders are suited to the UK's cooler waters with its wealth of insulation, likewise, there are many wading boots that are in the UK pertinent. Regardless of whether you want the boots attached or detached, chest waders are convenient for a multitude of reasons. Your upper body has a full range of motion, and your lower half still benefits from flexibility as well. You’re no less flexible than when wearing a pair of wader pants. Full-Body Waders

Neoprene– This material has great insulation properties and is very durable, perfect for cold conditions particularly for this less active angler. The first manufactured waders were made as early as the 1850s by a company called Hodgman. When rubber became popular around 1912, they started making the waders out of this particularly waterproof and durable material. [1]

Have you ever watched pro-level fly fishing on YouTube or perhaps even in person? If so, then you probably noticed that most if not all the anglers were wearing waders. Are waders really that necessary when fly fishing? If so, why? Breathable waders are naturally lighter and will obviously allow moisture to escape, hence the name. Common materials include nylon and polyester topped with a hydrophobic membrane such as Gore-Tex. A quality pair of waders offers you both warmth and comfort, but also access. Access to swims you wouldn’t be able to fish from the shore at a whole host of venues; rivers, vast reservoirs, commercial lakes or your local syndicate. It also allows you to capture and release bigger fish safely, keeping the bigger specimens in the water as much as possible is always a good idea and a set of waders permits you do just that without getting wet. As we alluded to in the last section, not all waders are the same. Let’s take this section to go over the different types you can buy and wear so you can decide where waders will fit into your fly fishing accessories list. Wading PantsWhen the days turn cold, if you’re still fly fishing, this is when you’ll want to retire polyester or nylon waders. Final Thoughts The one disadvantage to chest waders is it can get warm! During the summer months you wont want to be sweating it out in your waders all day, but the advantages of having almost full-body protection outweighs the one disadvantage – in the winter months it wont even be an issue.

VERSATILE - our waders are uninsulated and designed for layering to accommodate a wide variety of environments and temperatures Waders and wading boots are an important addition to your fly fishing gear. Wading will give you access to water that you would not otherwise be able to cast to. They will keep you dry and dedicated wading boots will provide you with secure traction when walking and wading through the water. Wader belts - In case you do manage to tip your waders, a wader belt will ensure that only the torso section of your waders becomes inundated with water. Use Revivex spray to restore the water repellence of the waders outer surface after washing – water should bead off the fabric surface when you emerge from the water. If your waders look dark when you come out of the water they have absorbed water and need to be treated.Depending on the kind of fish that the fisherman is catching, they might not need waders. Some fish are best caught on land. But some fish are best caught when the fisherman is chest deep in the water. Waders are also essential for keeping warm during colder months, because they keep the cold water off the skin, which otherwise could cause hypothermia or other problems. F 3.5 Fabric Technology– Used in Vision’s Ikon waders to give a pressure test of 13,000mm and breathability of 5,500g/m2/24hrs These materials on their own are lightweight and semi-waterproof, but they’ll usually have a waterproofing membrane to make them even more efficient at keeping water out. GORE-TEX– The best known brand of waterproof, breathable and windproof fabric, licensed exclusively to Simms for use in waders. You can expect the highest standards of performance from any product bearing the Goretex label. Gravel guards – Essentially sleeves on the ankle cuff of your waders, preventing gravel and dirt from entering your wading boots.
