Description

A few years before, the author spoke at the Unveiling of the Jock Lewes Memorial at an army base in Hereford.

The trio had been in competition with one another to see who could take down the most enemy planes and vehicles. Its founding commander, David Stirling, said later of Lewes, "Jock could far more genuinely claim to be founder of the SAS than I. His death was no less dramatic than his life: after successful raids on enemy aerodromes with his invention of Lewes Bombs, he was hunted down by a Messerschmitt 110 fighter.

Besides Jock and David, three other members of the 1937 crew were also killed in the War, “Con” Cherry, Paul Burrough and Gordon Merifield. His team wrought havoc on enemy lines, as they sneaked onto the runways and destroyed numerous enemy vehicles. The “fictional” Canaris is based on the real Wilhelm Canaris, who was a Nazi in the 1930s, but, who, after Germany’s attack on Poland in 1939, turned against Nazism and Hitler. Jock Lewes became a crucial part of the Special Air Service when he joined his team in their first set of operations. BBC’s drama series Rogue Heroes is based on Ben Macintyre’s book with the same name which was published in 2016.the unit cannot die as Layforce died; it is alive and will live gloriously renewing itself by its creative power in the imagination of men. Before taking on his mission, Jock went down to the beach for a swim, where he reminisced about his love interest.
