Clark compiled much of the information that makes up this book from interviews with Brubeck while traveling with Dave, his wife, and the band he was playing with later in his life and career. I have been interested in jazz and collected jazz records for 60 years and have read many books on the subject in that time.

I suppose that for some readers this will be very simple and an excellent narrative, but I can't see it myself. He was a “West Coast jazz” musician, but he wasn’t from the same LA scene as the players who were associated with that label and didn’t sound like them either. Combining his commitment to jazz with the lessons learned during his early studies with the expatriate French classical composer Darius Milhaud, he was happy to explore a hybrid work such as his brother Howard’s four-movement “Dialogues for Jazz Combo and Orchestra”, which he and his quartet recorded with the New York Philharmonic in 1960, under the baton of Leonard Bernstein. I wish I had been able to have a real conversation with them; they were very nice, but I was so excited, I could barely speak. The books featured on this site are aimed primarily at readers aged 13 or above and therefore you must be 13 years or over to sign up to our newsletter. I would have to seen more about Brubeck's life and his music without the technical terms this book took. Brubeck came of age as one of the "greatest generation" and went on to bring his own brand of west coast cool jazz into homes across America with his breakthrough hit album, "time Out" in 1959. Clark shows no such reluctance, which means that readers unfamiliar with “polytonal chords” – a favourite Brubeckian device – may find themselves struggling, although the author’s sheer enthusiasm generally preserves the momentum. I started to read looking for the key to appreciating Brubeck which in over 50 years of intense jazz listening I haven't managed to do.

Woven throughout are cameo appearances from a host of unlikely figures, from Sting, Ray Manzarek of The Doors, and Keith Emerson to John Cage, Leonard Bernstein, Harry Partch, and Edgard Varèse. Brubeck opened up as never before, disclosing his unique approach to jazz; the heady days of his "classic" quartet in the 1950s-60s; hanging out with Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Louis Armstrong, and Miles Davis; and the many controversies that had dogged his 66-yearlong career. Time Out may be what Brubeck (1920-2012) is known for, but, as Philip Clark reveals in Dave Brubeck: A Life in Time , it is merely the highlight of his long career as a composer, pianist and bandleader. Each chapter explores a different theme or aspect of Brubeck’s life and music, illuminating the core of his artistry and genius.Blocks of harmony passing between the brass and the saxophones, that was how arrangers tended to think, and i loved those arrangements. I bought "Time Out"when first released, and his "Carnegie Hall Concert" 6 months ago [probably his best record ever], and that was about it! Another episode reaccented the 3+3 of 6/8 to become the 2+2+2 of 3/4, a neat rhythmic pun to chew on as Brubeck's harmony feasted on another, more existential ambiguity: Was the music in the major or the minor?
