About this deal

Each plant puts up a large number of delicate stalks which carry large panicles of five-petalled flowers.

Thin seedlings to six to eight inches (15-20 centimeters) apart. G. elegans makes a beautiful ground cover when planted en masse, so this species may not need thinning. Sow seeds thinly, 9 inches (23 cm.) apart once any chance of frost is over. Spread 1/4 inch (6 mm.) of fine soil over the seeds and firm it. Water the bed and keep it lightly moist. Dig a hole for each plant, approximately 9 inches apart large enough to amply accommodate the root ball.

Light: Provide Gypsophila with plenty of direct sunlight, ensuring that other nearby plants do not overshadow them. Aim to ensure they receive six hours or more each day. Overwintering: Baby’s Breath is a hardy perennial and can withstand cold temperatures. In colder climates (USDA zones 3-4), apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant in late fall to provide extra insulation and protect the roots from freezing temperatures. Always wear gloves when handling compost, seeds and plants. Annual, alpine and perennial Gypsophila are all best planted in their final positions, as they do not like root disturbance.

To be honest, Baby’s Breath is not a great plant for beds or containers though it is superlative for everything else. The baby’s breath flower we know belongs to the genus Gypsophila. You’re probably most familiar with the perennial form of baby’s breath which is a popular ‘behind-the-scenes’ filler in bouquets, often setting off more colorful, larger blooms such as roses. It’s a common Valentine’s Day and wedding flower as well and, fittingly, a symbol of everlasting love. See the Meaning of Flowers.Flowers: Baby’s Breath flowers are small and usually white or pale pink, forming clusters that create a light, airy effect. Leafhoppers: Leafhoppers cause injury to leaves and stunt growth. They also spread disease. Burpee Recommends: Remove plant debris. Use insecticidal soaps. Consult your Cooperative Extension Service for other insecticide recommendations. People fell in love with the dainty, airy blooms and florists saw its potential as a versatile cut flower. It’s a staple in every flower shop, and is used in bouquets for every occasion, from weddings to funerals. Give your plants well-draining, neutral to slightly alkaline soil in a sunny spot, and they will grow splendidly. Compact and acidic soils are a no-no.

Out of the about 150 species and several dozen cultivars that comprise Genus Gypsophila, several are well known to anyone who has received a bouquet and to most of those who have sent one. 2 The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica. This should avoid water logging and rotten roots, and provide a good balance of fresh water from spring to late autumn.
