About this deal

Given the high price tag associated with this sweet, rich liquid, which purported manuka honey benefits live up to the hype? With the expertise of Mike Wakeman, clinical nutritionist at Feel Alive, we take a look what the science so far can tell us about manuka honey benefits – and explain what to look for on the label: MGO in Mānuka honey is naturally made in the hive from DHA which is present in the nectar of the Manuka Bush. Within the hive DHA undergoes the Maillard reaction to naturally form MGO. Strep throat is an infection that manifests in a painful and inflamed throat. The cause of strep throat is bacteria known as Streptococcus pyogenes, also known as group A streptococcus. Genuine New Zealand Mānuka Honey. Independently tested to show it meets the New Zealand Government's definition of Mānuka honey. The benefits of Manuka honey have been celebrated for centuries, including soothing sore throats and supporting general wellness. It was the indigenous people of New Zealand, the home of Manuka Honey, who, thousands of years ago, first recognised its healing properties and today it is appreciated all over the world.

You might also be familiar with the NPA rating which relates to the amount of Non-Peroxide Activity there is within the Manuka honey. NPA is a measurement of MGO and below are the equivalents: When researchers analysed six types of honey, they found that manuka contained the highest levels of antioxidant activity. It is the Methylglyoxal (MG) compound that sets Manuka honey apart from other types of honey. Other types of honey do contain some MG but in much lower quantities. The hydrogen peroxide in honey is not very stable and easily breaks down when exposed to light and heat. MG, on the other hand, is much more stable and doesn’t lose its antibacterial properties. The MGO rating system was pioneered by Manuka Health after the company discovered it was one of the key naturally occurring compounds that make manuka honey special. Scientific research into the healing properties of Manuka honey has established that it certainly is a powerful antibacterial agent.

It’s important to note that the MGO content of Manuka honey changes over time. The MGO concentration initially increases rapidly during the first couple of years after harvest due to the chemical conversion of DHA to MGO. However, as the DHA supply gets used up, the rate of conversion declines. In fact, in honey nearing the end of a five-year shelf life, the MGO concentration begins to drop due to insufficient DHA availability. As there are no UK guidelines to classify Manuka honey grades, we recognise that it can be difficult to shop products and compare them to understand with Manuka honey which strength you should buy. The reason why Manuka honey is unique is because the bush contains strong antibacterial compounds found mostly in Leptospermum plants 1. Components of Manuka Honey

In clinical trials onto the effect of Manuka honey and IBD, scientists found that Manuka honey reduced inflammation in the colon 10. The manuka tree has been known for centuries to have special properties and has long been used in traditional medicine, so perhaps it is no surprise that the honey that is produced from the nectar of the tree should equally have unusual properties.

At this point it is worth noting that some honey is sold as Manuka honey, but only contains a little amount of MG. So, make sure when you buy Manuka honey that it has the UMF trademark on it with the UMF factor. Also, to be classed as Manuka honey, it has to come from New Zealand. What is MGO? However, a widely supported definition of authentic Manuka exists. It was set up by the UMF Honey Association and determines the minimum quantity of naturally occurring chemicals only found in the nectar of the Manuka flowers that must be present in the honey to be authenticated as Manuka.

Our hives can be found in the remote Manuka forests of the South Taranaki region, New Zealand. This isolation, away from built up city’s and people, result in some of the purest honey in the world. At Healthy and Natural World, our mission is to empower people to take control of their own health by providing comprehensive, practical and well researched information. This was discovered by Manuka Health and a research team in Germany to be the special compound that needs to present for a honey to be classed as genuine manuka honey.

In addition, MGO acts differently in honey than in isolation, with other elements present in the honey that alter how this chemical interacts with bacteria. This highlights that MGO is only a part of the picture and not the sole contributor behind the significant non-peroxide antibacterial activity of Manuka honey. Ensuring Authenticity and Quality: MGO is Not the Only Factor

Developing a system to measure the MGO content in Manuka honey was first initiated by Dr. Peter Molan from the University of Waikato in New Zealand. His system, named “Molan Gold Standard”, gave us a viable metric to evaluate Manuka honey. Manuka honey has long been used as a treatment and protective barrier for burns, sores, and other wounds, thanks to its antibacterial and antioxidant properties. Topical application has been shown to enhance the regeneration of tissue, reduce healing time, and even decrease pain in multiple studies. ‘Manuka honey has the ability to stimulate macrophages which are needed for reducing microbial infections and helping in tissue healing,’ says Wakeman. It may even help reverse resistance to antibiotics in bacteria such as MRSA, the Society for General Microbiology found. 5. Promotes oral health MGO 250+ Manuka Honey is a natural and delicious honey that captures the essence and taste of the natural environment in New Zealand. MGO concentrations in Manuka honey can range quite widely, from as low as 80 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) to exceeding 1800mg/kg. To put that into perspective, Manuka honey generally contains nearly 100 times more MGO than conventional types of honey. Many of Manuka’s healthful attributes are thought to relate to its major antibacterial component, methylglyoxal (MGO). Even though MGO is found in most types of honey, it’s usually in much smaller quantities. In manuka honey, MGO comes from the conversion of a compound called dihydroxyacetone, which is found in high concentration in manuka flowers. The higher the concentration of MGO, the stronger the antibiotic effect. ‘Researchers have found that manuka honey has a higher antibacterial activity against various strains of bacteria, with a stronger effect coming from manuka honey with higher MGO levels,’ says Wakeman. 3. Additionally, storage conditions such as temperature can impact the rate of DHA to MGO conversion. The ideal storage temperature to balance the DHA to MGO conversion is at or below 23°C. The Role of UMF™ Grading System Because Manuka honey is an effective antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory topical treatment for skin problems, it is also excellent for treating shingles. Honey has been used since ancient times as a topical treatment for wounds and other skin infections.
