About this deal

The narrative relating the extent of the family’s spending spree I found to be distasteful though, no doubt, this was the intention of the author. I love that the tension arises over the winning of the money and that slow divergences come to light. Lexi, who works for an organization providing services to the needy, would much rather donate large portions of the winnings. There is a subplot involving a foreign national, Toma, who has lost his family in a tragedy which, initially seems tangential, but later becomes very much part of the ongoing narrative.

Lexi and Jake are adamant that two weeks prior to the win the couples all fell out over continuing to do the lottery and pulled out. This can be an effective storytelling device, but in this case, waiting for the private investigator heroine to get to where the reader is at the beginning of the story feels interminable. I felt that the character of Jake was very unlikeable and this made me wonder why Lexi hadn’t spotted all his awful traits before the lottery win. There are alot of nasty characters in this book -money certainly does bring out the worst in people.

ADELE PARKS does a wonderful job with the characters here in showing us how winning a big lottery can affect some people in how they behave, choices that they make and the lengths they will go to secure that win.I am sure anyone who has ever bought a lottery ticket has spent some time dreaming of what great riches might allow them to do. Brooks presents a case for making room for Bigfoot in the world while peppering his narrative with timely social criticism about bad behavior on the human side of the conflict: The explosion of Rainier might have been better forecast had the president not slashed the budget of the U. Most people, regardless of if they play the lottery or not, have dreamed about winning and how they would spend it.

However, Lexi and Jake Greenwood contend that the other two families pulled out of the syndicate the week before the win and, therefore, they are not entitled to any of the money. There are various strands to the plot culminating in a near catastrophe and, as the story unfolds, we view the action through the eyes of both Lexi and her teenage daughter, Emily. This exhilarating, shrewdly observed tale about morality and greed from Parks ( Lies, Lies, Lies) focuses on three English couples.I didn't care for Jake at all, I thought he was immature and I also thought that Lexi did not stand up for herself or to him strongly enough. Poorly written, Long and drawn out, badly edited, unlikable characters and an implausible plot, makes this book one of the worst I've read in a long time. Lexi and Jake Greenwood have been together for the best part of twenty-five-years and are parents to fifteen-year-old Emily and thirteen-year-old Logan.
